The generation of people who grew up in the late nineteen seventies and early nineteen eighties is well-known for, um, not knowing much about love. But what we lacked in our romantic exposure to that "little thing called love," we made up for with our exposure to music that featured this "little thing called love." Michael Jackson’s “Billie Jean” was a dance-floor classic; Madonna’s “Material Girl” was a topic of intense conversation; and Prince’s “When Doves Cry" was something you could bump all day long. But while these three artists stood above the rest in terms of their amazing love songs, there was one group whose love songs remain a singular cultural force. And their name is OST "First Love A Little Thing Called Love," a blockbuster soundtrack released in October of 1987 on a small record label called Arista Records. The album features three hit singles from the band’s debut album, which was released earlier that year. "In the Still of the Night" was a huge hit across Europe and parts of Asia, and went top 10 in America, while "Crazy on You" went gold and platinum (1 million) here in America. First Love A Little Thing Called Love is one of those rare albums that doesn't just dance to your beat. It's a way of life. A spirit that transcended the four walls of a studio, and became a really big hot tub.Inspired by a postcard from a former lover, Arista Records executive Clive Davis set out to make an album that captured the moods and emotions of love with all its highs and lows. While his inspiration was specific—an old girlfriend with whom he had parted ways—his purpose was larger: to draw on the soulful energy of music’s adolescent years as a way to channel “the best love songs from the most soulful singers. ” The resulting album spans four decades, from the ‘50s crooning of Frank Sinatra to the ‘80s crooning of Luther Vandross, with plenty of romance in between. It features an eclectic mix of eternal romantic ballads and signature rock tunes—from Frank Sinatra’s eternal “The Way You Look Tonight” to The Beatles' iconic “Because,” from Woodstock fixture Jimi Hendrix's "Come On (Let the Good Times Roll)" to psychedelic folk-rocker Donovan’s "Catch the Wind." "We just wanted to create a mood that was warm and romantic," Davis said. "We wanted to capture the feeling of love in its many phases." On November 13, 1987, OST First Love A Little Thing Called Love was certified gold by the Recording Industry Association of America for sales in excess of 500,000 copies. The album peaked at #10 on the "Billboard" 200 albums chart, where it spent 41 weeks during 1987-1988. The album's first single, "In the Still of the Night," went Gold and Platinum (1 million) in the US. cfa1e77820
